- A great famine broke over Ireland in (1846-47). It effected the district very severely. The district was greatly populated. Drumacille school was as a stirrabout house. One meal a day was given to the people. My uncle Jack in County Leitrim has a piece of the boiler that they used in (1846-47) When the weather became sultry the ground got heated up. The blith came on the potatoes; they decayed in the ground and afterwards in the pits. What ever potatoes they got they kept the seed for the following year and sowed them broadcast. They baked cakes of Indian meal and Farrels of wheaten bread when they could not get potatoes. Government relief soon reached the district. People and animals died in great numbers some from fever and others from starvation.
