- In former times houses were built of mud and stones with black oak sticks for rafters. They were thatched with straw and rushes. The straw was grown locally. There was always a bed in the kitchen. It was called a settle bed. Some times the fire was in the middle of the floor, and a hole in the roof for the smoke to go out. During a storm the rain and wind came down and put out the fire.
Some times houses had wooden chimneys which went on fire many times. The floor in olden times was made of clay. Half doors were very common in former times but at the present day there are not so common. Turft and sticks were used for firing. Tallow candles were used for giving light at nighty. Candles were made locally.
