When a match is introduced the old people appoint a day and met at some public-house and fix the fortune.If they agree the land has to be seen"writings drawn"up and a day fixed for the happy event.A day is also appointed when the boy will come to the girl's house to "Pick the Gander".A very old gander is got, killed and cooked and the boy has to pick every every bit of him and have his "nails sharpened".If the gander is well boiled he can easily digest it (This was the meaning of Picking the Gander in olden times).
