In May 1872 about 5 A.M when nearing the banks of Newfoundland the captain and crew including a young Kilbaha sailor of the "barque" "Rude Palmer" "observed a canoe manned by four men, about a mile south-east of the ship which at the time was sailing under reefed sails on a south -west course.The weather was stormy and a canoe on that part of the ocean in such weather was a most extraordinary sight. The ship "hove to" waiting for the canoe which was soon alongside.There were four young Kilbaha men in her named, Brennan and White,Hanrahan and Mc Namara .The last mentioned was a brother of the sailor Mc Namara on board the barque.They were invited on board ship but declined on some excuse or other.They asked Mc Namara to come in to the canoe with them.
