- Shops were not plenty in this district long ago. The people used make purchases at the fairs and markets. The things that were sold in the shops in the towns were, bread, tobacco and pipes. Underwear and bed clothes were sold at the fairs. Work used be given for goods instead of money.
The words that were connected with buying and selling were tick, boot and change.
Long ago people used think that Mondays and Fridays were unlucky days for shopping.
The pedlars used go to the fairs and markets gathering rags and giving needles, hairpins and laces for them. The coins that have gone out of use are the tenpenny bits and the fourpenny bits.
