  1. Once upon a time there was a man building a chimney and the woman said to him: "Make it with a good draught so that it will draw the smoke." He replied "I guarantee if it doesn't draw smoke it will draw tears."

  2. There was a man from Ballan in the English regiment. As the soldiers were advancing towards some town the sentries were passing on the word "Send us reinforcements, we are going to advance." When it came to this man's turn instead of the proper word he said "Lend us three- and four-pence we are going to a dance." His comrades thought he was mad and sent him back to Ballan.
