  2. There was a man from Ballan in the English regiment. As the soldiers were advancing towards some town the sentries were passing on the word "Send us reinforcements, we are going to advance." When it came to this man's turn instead of the proper word he said "Lend us three- and four-pence we are going to a dance." His comrades thought he was mad and sent him back to Ballan.
