  1. The Last Dream by Charles J. Kickham.
You never could be mine, lady,
    I never wish you mine,
And yet I tremble now to take
    Your image from its shrine
Its shrine within my heart lady,
Where many a hope lies dead
How dark that heart will be when thus
The last sweet dream has fled.
That dream without a hope, lady,
    But still how passing dear
Has shed its sunshine on my path
    Through many a weary year.
Ah! Blame me not if grief should cast
    Its shade upon my brow
And mingle with the joy I feel
    That you are happy now.
'Twere sweet to say remember me
    And feel amid life's gloom
A loneliness that in thy heart
A thought of me might bloom.
'Twere gladly sweet to say farewell
To clasp thy hand and press
Upon thy cheek one parting kiss
    A first and last caress.
