- St. Stephen's Day.
On St. Stephen's Day men and boys dress up in funny clothes, and blacken or mask their faces so that they are disguised. They take with them musical instruments and play all kinds of tunes. They travel from house and always sing the following verse : -"The wren, the wren,
The king of all birds,
St. Stephen's day was caught in the furze
Up with the kettle
And down with the pan,
Gives us our answer and let us be gone."They also sing other songs and dance Irish dances they received money from the "bean-tighe." In the evening they divide the money they have collected and usually finish up the day by going to a dance. The are commonly known as "Wren Boys" and they usually "drink" what they collect."Chalk Sunday".
