It got its name from the ancient tradition that this sweet flower was found among the grass and herbs that were gathered on the first Christmas Eve to make a bed for Our Lady. Holly, too, which is used as a Christian decoration was regarded as a sacred plant, for the red berries were said to represent the Holy Blood, and the prickly leaves the Crown of Thorns.
