- It was the custom long ago to hunt the wren on St Stephen's day. When they catch her they kill her and put her in a box which they decorate with ribbons and holly and they go from house to house and gather pence. When they come to a house they say some rhyme. The boys around St Mullins say this one.
The wren, the wren, as you may see,
Is covered in a holly tree,
A bunch of ribbons by her side
St Mullins' boys to be her guide.,
A pocketful of money and a barrel of beer,
We wish you all a merry Christmas
And a bright and happy New year.
It was the custom on St. Martin's night to kill a cock and to sprinkle the blood on the threshold of the door.- Bailitheoir
