The chief food of the people when the potatoes failed was Indian meal and made in to stirabout with milk. When the Indian meal was well boiled it was not too bad. When it was half done it was very bad food. In want of food several people got fever and several people went in to the hospital. Several of them died. The people who did not go in to the Hospital got on better so many of them did not die. The Hospitals were over crowded and they could not get proper care.
It was about that time the emigration started to America. All the young boys and girls went to America to earn their living. They went over in small sailing ships. It often took(continues on next page)
