- On the fifteenth day of August ? years ago in the year 1893 a very sad growing fatality occurred outside Tarbert. On that day seventeen young Ceare people were drowned.
On the morning before the tragedy had taken place they set out with light hearts to enjoy themselves at the kilrush races after an enjoyable day they set out again, for home. They were all in good cheer. They little dreamt they would be victims of the sea before ten o'clock that night.
We do not know what misfortune befell them but at a short distance from the shore the people of Ballylongford and Tarbert heard them crying to Heaven for God to save crying to Heaven for God to save them. The natives could offer no assistance as there was no boat available to try and save the unfortunate people who were drowning.
