- There were several old coal mines in Doonane about one hundred years ago. There were three men working in one pit and they got trapped and the air in the pit got foul. The people sent for Father Kelly the parish priest. When the priest came he asked the man who was in charge of the pit to point out to him the exact spot where the men were entombed in the pit. Then the priest prayed over it for a long time. He called to the men under the ground asking were they alive and it is supposed that the priest heard them answer. Then he told the manager to start to get the men out of the pit. When the rescuers began to go down they could not descend as the air was very bad. The priest blew his breath down the shaft and the air got pure(continues on next page)
