  1. Hedge - schools existed in this district long ago. There is an old cowshed down near the fireclay factory in the Swan. It is owned by James Kealy of Slatt. There was a school in this shed in olden times. Reading and writing were taught in the school. Writing was done with a slate pencil on 'signers'. 'Signers' were flat stones which are still found around this district. The teacher was called the 'poor scholar' and the childern in turn would take him to there own homes and give him his meals and they would also give him a bed. It was in this way that they paid him. The teachers who taught in this school were strangers in the district. The teachers used to go around from one district to another.
