- In former times bread was always made from wheat or oats and these were grown locally but the flour was not made locally. The old people often heard when querns were used for grinding wheat and corn.The people long ago made wheaten bread, oat bread, potato bread, and boscty bread. The oatmeal bread was made by getting the oatmeal and mixing it with hot water. After that it was put into a vessel called a bannack, and it was left there till it was baked.The wheaten bread was made by mixing flour and wheat together. Boscty was made with grated boiled potoatoes, flour and a little salt and soda mixed together. There was no milk or water used in kneading it. Long ago they used to make enough bread that would do them for a week.When they made this bread there was always a cross cut on top of the cake and this was done to keep the sides from rising up.
