  1. A long time ago the people in China did not eat pork, so one day they accidentally discovered it could be eaten.
A swine herd who had gone out into the woods, had left his eldest son to look after the cottage. This boy was fond of playing with fire, so while his father was away, he let some sparks escape into a bundle of straw.
It quickly kindled, and the cottage was all in flames Together with the cottage a number of pigs perished. Pigs were very valuable in China, and the boy was very much upset owing to what happened.
While he was thinking upon what he should say to his father, he smelt a lovely smell, but he did not know from whence it came.
Then he stooped down, to smell one of the pigs, and as he touched it he burnt his fingers. To cool his fingers he applied them to his mouth, and for the first time in his life he tasted crackling - as they call it. He licked at his fingers for a long time, and at last he thought it was the pig that smelt so nice.
When his father came home, he was beaten. His father would not listen to such a thing as eating any of the pig.
