  1. As the sun rose high in the morning sky
And the fields were wet with dew.
I strayed beside the Bandon's tide
    Where the woodbine sweetly grew
I heard a song in the woods along
    Like the thrush's morning lay
    It was a comely maid
    Who quietly strayed
At the dawning of the day.
No shoe nor stocking cap nor cloak
    This lovely maid did wear
But her hair like shining silver
    Shone on her shoulders bare
With a smiling pail all in her hand
    So modest and so gay
    She appeared to me
    Like Venus bright
At the dawning of the day.
"Good morning, Miss" I gently kissed
    And timidly grew near
Why do you roam so far from home
Or have you got no fear
She said my friend my way I went
