- Long ago the Catholic's of Ireland were very oppressed by English laws. Mass had to be said secretly. Bishops or priests could not go round unless under the pain of death. In the days of Cromwell, an Irish army, and an English army approached each other at Macroom. Bishop MacEgan of course was with the Irish army when it became known that he was near. Conformation was given on an island in the Foherish between Glounanarrig and Carrigaphooka. The island was then called Bishops Island. Bishop MacEgan was then taken prisoner, and carried to Macroom Castle while the Irish held Carrigadrohid Castle. The English soldiers told Bishop MacEgan(continues on next page)
