  1. The land league was formed so that the people would not pay the high rents.
    About 40 years ago William Dwyre of Schahan was evicted out of his place when he stood up against the high rents. All the people of the parish gathered around on the following day. They all brought their horses and cars and gathered stones. They built a house for William Dwyre in a few days. It was called the land league house.
    He remained in the Land League house for one year. Some of the outstanding rent was forgiven him, so he got back his old home again. The reason why he was evicted is because he said he would not pay the high rents. The rents were reduced from that out. So William Dwyre was the first man in Berehaven that stood up against paying the high rents. This parish was a part of Mr. Payne's estate.
