- About sixty years ago or even less a wake was an occasoin of great amusement in a countryside.
The person would no sooner be dead than the news would travel through the country side and young and old would pay a visit to a or "berral house" as they called it.
Meanwhile at the "berral house" the people would have a very busy time. The first thing they did was to get the barn cleaned out and seats of some sort were put around all the walls just as if for a dance. A big table was borrowed from some neighbour as very few had one large enough on which to 'wake' a person. Sheets were hung all around the table and crosses made of laurels were sewn on them. When all was ready the corpse was (ready) brought in and laid on the table.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
