- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)There were two forges in Lanesboro some years ago one was owned by Mr James Farrell of Gurteen and the other owned by the late Mr Dan McGuinness of Lanesboro. Mr Dan McGuinness had the forge all his life.
One day he was shoeing a cow and the cow kicked him and he died that week. Mr James Farrell of Gurteen went away and left the forge to his son.
These forges were built on the side of the road. McGuinness forge was a small forge with a straw roof. The door is in the shape of a horse shoe. There is no fire place in it only a room for the bellows. The bellows was a big leather one. He used to shoe asses and cattle.
He used to make harrow pins, axils for carts and mend ploughs. If people brought a plough or anything to be mended, if it was too big to go into the forge he would fix it outside. Long ago the forge was a place for story telling.- Bailitheoir
