My Grandfather was nearly being evicted for killing a fox. The tenants were punished for very trifling acts, for instance they were fined for cutting Ash trees.

2. Clothes Made Locally

   There is no tailors in this district but there are three in the town of Newmarket Mr. Bermingham, Mr. Lane and Mr. O Riordan. The tailors work in their own homes. Long ago tailors used to go from house to house. The tailors in Newmarket stock no Cloths. There are no cloth spun or woven in this locality. The types of Cloth worn and used locally are tweeds, serge and overcoats are made of frieze. The saying I ever heard about a tailor is "nine tailors to make a man." The gear or implements that a tailor use are :- chalk, tape, scissors, thimble, thread, needle, goose, Iron lapboard. A tailor's thimble is different to the other thimbles. There is no head on the top of it.
   Stockings and socks are made locally. Thread is not spun locally. There is only one spinning wheel in the locality and the person that owns it is Mrs. O Sullivan of Clongeel.
   The shirts that were made long ago were made of bandle cloth, this cloth was made from flax, a shirt of this material would last a person for years.
