- KIllarney is known all over the world for the beauty of its lakes and hills. Many wonderful stories have been told about the origin of its lakes. The following legend is an example
In days gone by Killarney was a valley for grazing and cornfields. It was owned by a rich farmer. In the middle of the valley was a bubbling spring, a "fairy fountain", as it was believed to be. This had to be kept tightly closed down by a heavy flagstone, to prevent the water from rushing out and flooding the land.
Every morning and evening the farmer's daughter came with her maids and raised the flagstone from the fountain. When they had their pails filled with water the farmer's daughter put the stone in its place. One evening when the maids had drawn the water and were returning home, a young lord rode up to the "fairy fountain", and spoke to the farmer's daughter.
