  1. In Ireland long ago a great many poor people went from house to house to sell things as there were not any workhouses then. People used to give them eggs, bread, flour, meal and clothing. Some gave them rags and they gave pins and needles in exchange for these.
    There were a great many poor women also going round and they got leave to stay a night in each house. The people of the house made a bed in the corner for these people.
