  1. We have a churn-barrel at home. It is on a stand. There is a handle in the side of it with which you would wheel around the barrel. It is two and a half feet in height. It is a foot and a half from side to side at both the bottom and the top. It is about six years since it was made. We have five cows. Butter is made once a week during Summer and about every fortnight during Winter. The house-keeper makes the churn. If a stranger comes in while it is being made he helps to make it. It was the belief in olden that if he went out without helping to make it the people would not have their due amount of butter. It takes generally about half an hour to make the churn. The hands are moved while making it. There is a glass in the centre of the cover and when the butter is made the glass becomes clear. The cover is taken off and the butter is taken out with two hand spades. It is then washed and afterwards the water is well drawn from from the butter. Then it is made into a lump
