   The Black Chest.
   This was a chest or bin made of black oak and used for holding meal flour +c. It was always placed in the kitchen and was proof against rats, mice, moths and time.

   A grater was used to grate the potatoes when making boxty bread.

   A Tally iron was used by old women in shaping the borders of their linen caps.

   The furniture, chairs tables stools +c were made of plain wood scoured white with sand. Small low stools for children were called creepy stools.

   Food consisted chiefly of oatmeal porridge, oaten bread, soda bread, potato bread with boxty occasionally particularly on Hallow Eve. Potatoes with cabbage dressed with fat bacon or sometimes potatoes with buttermilk and salt were taken for dinner.
   Tea is now taken there and sometimes four times in the day and baker's bread is taking the place of the homemade variety
