    And the thunderous roar of the storm-tossed ocean,
    Made the bravest hearts quake with dark fear.
    The unlucky strangers who stood on the deck,
    Of the "Mexico" saw it was vain,
    To struggle 'gainst such storm and billows,
    To reach home in the bleak Norway again.

    'Twas in the dread waters of famed Bannow Bay,
    That these mariners lost all command,
    And signals from shore were alas no avail,
    Their ship struck in Keeragh island.
    Just then from the shore that heroic band,
    The Fethard boat crew could be seen,
    Forgetful of home, of selves and of danger,
    Rowing in haste to the scene.

    Though dreadful the tempest, tremendous the billows
    In very few minutes they'd reach to the wreck,
    But alas! how heartbreaking, a trecherous billow,
    Has broken upon them, has swept clear their deck.
    Unrelenting its fury, it grasped as a play thing,
    The ironbound lifeboat with all its brave crew,
    And with stupendous strength against the rock barrier,
    The boat and its occupants wickedly threw.

    One shriek from toil worn and now battered heroes
    One glance at the wreck, all hope now seems vain,
    Their thoughts turn to home, then for pity to Heaven,
    As they sank-on life's waves to sail never again,
