    smith uses a hammer and a sledge to beat out the iron on the anvil. The anvil is a large piece of iron with one end pointed and it is placed on a block of wood. He shoes horses, donkeys and ponies. The shoeing wheels is done outside by the blacksmith.

  2. There are two forges in the parish at present. One of them belongs to Mr. Donegan and the other to Pat Ball. These two forges are at crossroads. There was another forge at the Knock cross about forty years ago. His name was John Gilegan. This forge was slated with a square door. His ancestors were all in the trade before him. There was one fire in this forge. He made the bellows himself. The water used for cooling the iron is supposed to be a cure for chilblains. Mr. Donegan's forge is covered with zinc and it has one fireplace. The
