- There was once a man named William Murohy, known locally as Big Bill Murphy. He was a man of extraordinary strenght. He lived in the village of Liscarroll about eight miles to the north-east of this town. The feats of strength performed by this giant are still related in this district. he was a blacksmith by trade and on several occasions used to take his anvil around the country in his hand when he went to do jobs for farmers and others. There is an old castle in the village which is about 80 ft high. On one occasion for a small wage he took a sledge weighing 30 lbs and standing close beneath the Castle walls he flung the weight clean over the top.
The people still show strangers the place where he stood and the portion of the Castle on which he cast the Sledge. This district always possessed men of great strength. In modern times the(continues on next page)- Collector
