    curtained off to hide the bed. The rooms were also curtained off with thick cloth hanging from the roof to the ground instead of walls. The beds were all wooden home made ones. The poor people had no beds. They slept on straw on the floor.
    Long ago there were no chimneys. There was only a hole in the roof to let the smoke out. The fire was often near the window and the smoke went out through it instead of a chimney.
    There were no bolts to lock the door with long ago. Before the people went to bed they used to put a big stick inside the door. This stick was called the báta. In front of a house there was usually a large yard made of sand. This was known as "the street". Sometimes a
