    Another day a woman of Carrickbanagher was churning and a man of the same district went in for a coal to kindle his pipe, and the woman never got the butter on the milk.
    To prevent the butter from being taken the old people used to singe the back of the cow three times with a half-burned sod of turf. This was supposed to prevent the butter from being taken if anybody entered the house while the milk was churning.
    Another day a woman was churning all day but the butter failed to come on the milk. When she was quite exhausted the send the servant to the well for some water to sprinkle on the milk. On reaching the well the servant found that all the butter was floating on top of the water.
    When she stirred the water the butter sank to the bottom of the well. Then the girl took up a gallon full of clear water
