It is said that the bell which now occupies the belfry of the Protestant Church at Carndonagh was formerly in use in the Catholic Church before the sixteenth century. In the year 1890 a man name Robert Moore while cleaning the bell saw the following inscription "Sancta Maria, Ora pro - nobis". It is supposed that it was cast in Italy and that it was found soon after a ship had been wrecked off the Irish coast. It is thought that it was first intended for Catholic use and it weighs over a hundred pounds.
