But a few to whom fate bestowed tender mercy,
Were spared from that sudden and terrible death,
And they struggled with some of the Mexico's crew,
To land on dark Keeragh - almost breaking last breath.
    vii
And there in the cold they saw their companions,
Stilled now in death and cast up on the land,
While their warm Irish blood now dyed the dead waters,
Oh heroic death of a gallant young band.
But now without fire, without food, without shelter,
The grim hand of Death seems to seek them once more,
But thank God, they are rescued by heroes from Wexford,
And a gallant young crew from sea - girt Dunmore.
    viii
All honour and praise to those worthy heroes,
Who snatched the survivors from Death's cruel hand,
May their names live forever in gold lines unfolded,
A credit to Ireland - their own dear homeland
And may ne'er be forgotten those heroes departed,
And for their repose let us send forth a prayer,
Let us join with the strangers in paying all honour,
To their unfading memories - ever, everywhere.
    ix
And what of the widows and poor helpless children
Deprived with such haste of their breadwinners dear,
Oh kind hearted Christians, to honour the heroes,
The help the bereaved ones, I ask you to hear.
And of your abundance a trifle just send them
Where many will help, 'twill come light on all,
So for charity's sake help the poor orphans,
Rescue those helpless ones from poverty's pall.
