- A Local Shipwreck.
The Mexico which was coming from Mexico bound for Liverpool and laden with mahogany was wrecked on the Kiroes Islands on February the nineteenth, ninteen hundred and fourteen. The Fethard lifeboat came to her assistance but by some mysterious management eight of her crew were drowned and the lifeboat was lost.
The remaining four of the crew got safely to the Island. The Mexico crew also got ashore to the Island except one man who was drowned. He was a passenger who was sailing for the good of his health. The crew of the Mexico and lifeboat were on the Island from the Friday evening till the following Monday owing to the bad seas.
They were taken off by the Dungarvan lifeboat which landed them at Fethard where they were treated with hospitality. The bodies of the most of the lifeboat crew that were drowned were washed ashore. Some of them were washed ashore between Blackhall and Cullenstown. Two of the sailors belonging to the Mexico cut the ship's boat from her davids when they saw the danger.
