- (continued from previous page)during the Spring-time. I heard my grandfather saying that that there is a blaack thing something the shape and size of a dog minding the fort. The land is never tilled that is near a fort. Once a man was cutting bushes in a fort and he got a thorn in his hand and he died from the effect of it. There is also an old school house at this fort.
- About thirty two years ago a man named Dan Farrell Quaker Island or InishClothran was drowned opposite the Island. It is said that the man was coming from his own house going to meet a steamer. The Steamer was coming to the front of the Island from Athlone. The men on the Steamer threw him a rope from the steamer to tie it on to boat, so that the could toe him along. It is said that he tied his boat too near the Steamer and the current of the Steamer pulled the boat in under the Steamer and the poor man who was both killed and drowned. He was going to Lanesboro to get towed to Athlone with Steamer for parcels that he had. It was a great custom with the islanders to get towed up to Athlone with the Steamer; it saved great labour in the rowing.
Account told by James Sweeney Aughavadden born 1848 and still alive. He witnessed this drowning from the shore while was about one mile distant. - Informant
