- I often saw my grandfather James Sweeney, Cashel Co. Longford making creels and baskets. First he cuts some hazel rods in the fort. Then he dresses them and points them on one end. He sticks the pointed end down in the ground and he plaits the lighter ones in and out through them. He continues plaiting them until he has the creel made into shape. In some parts of Ireland there are two creels put on a donkeys back for carrying turf and other things. The basket is made in a different way. It is made with sally rods. He splits one of the strongest rod down in the centre and makes it into a hoop. He plaits other rods through it and makes it into the shape of a basket.
