- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)and used to take groceries with them to sell to the people along the road. People used to go to Callan and Mullinahone for certain things such as clothes, flour and meal and other things. People used to buy things after Mass especially those who had a long journey to come to Mass. This is still practised. There were houses in the district called "síbíns". A "síbín" is a house where drink is sold without a license. Poteen and beer used to be sold in them.
There was a shebeen at Farrell's of Gortfree (at present owned by Patrick Farrell Gortfree) near the Munster River. They used to sell stout and poteen but were never caught although they were raided by the police several times. They used to keep the "drink" in an old mill race.
