  1. In olden times there were four fairs held in Killeagh during the year, these were called quarterly fairs. Tolls were paid on each beast such as.

    3d on a horse.
    The bargain was made in the same way as today the seller would put out his hand and the buyer would give him a stroke on the hand.
    Very often earnest was given that was anything from a penny upwards which made the deal legal as there were no [?] at that time. Animals were marked with tar usually and if cattle were kept for grazing the name of the owner would be put on the horn with a red brand.
    The fairs were held in Killeagh, Castlemartyr, Mountuniacke, Ardagh and a fair was held in Ballymacoda
