There was one old woman in the parish and all belonging to her were dead with hunger and plague. Her last son was dead in the house and she was almost dead herself. She started out to Mass, and she reached the Chapel at the Elevation of the Host. She put up her hands and thanked God, and at that moment she fell dead.
Thousands of people were sent out of the country to America. They were sent in bottomless ships by the ancestors of the present Gores of Lissadell and were drowned in sight of their own homes. Their lands were turned into a demesne and are still called the seven Cartrons.
