   But they couldn’t catch the bird, and at last the man asked the bird to come down, that they wouldn’t do any thing to it. But the bird said that it was afraid of his seven animals, but if he’ed hit them with a branch of the tree under which they were standing, that she’d come down. So the man took a branch off the tree and hit the 7 animals and they all lay down very quiet. So the bird came down there and she pulled a wand from under her wing and hit the man and the 7 animals and turned them into 8 stones.
   When the brother of the man that married the princess came to the place where the penknife was stuck he saw it all rusted and he thought his brother was dead. So he followed his brothers’ tracks till he came to the kings palace and when the princess saw him with his seven animals, she thought it was her husband, and she began scolding him for going into the enchanted wood and leaving her alone for 12 months. So the man never let on a word, but next morning started off to hunt in the enchanted wood. The first thing he rose in the wood was a bird and they hunted the bird till it brought them to the heart of the wood beside a tree at the bottom of which was eight white stones.
