  1. 1. Before the ordinary candles came in force the people used rush candles. These were made from the pith of rushes. First they were boiled on butter, and then dried.
    2. Long ago the soap was made by suet and washing soda, The suet and soda would be boiled together and when it would freeze it would be cut up in squares.
    3. Long ago when the people would be building the byre's they would make shelves in the walls called "bowls". Then they would put hay in them for the hens to lay in.
