There was an old school in Kilcoran, parish of Tang and county of Westmeath where school was taught long ago. The school was built with larch poles and galvanized iron. The scholars were seated on stools and wooden blocks while school was being carried on. The teacher's name was Patrick Nally. At that time the pupils wrote with nails and slates. The blackboard was a big slate and the teacher wrote with a six inch nail. The teacher lived in a hut beside the school, and he was paid by the pupils. They used bring him eggs and food. - You are not logged in, but you are welcome to contribute a transcription anonymously.
