The hunger was so great that in some districts the people at the donkeys that had served them on their little farms. The people were like savages. They went around almost naked. They went into turnip fields and tried to grab up the roots which had been left.
When the people were left so hungry a disease known as "famine fever" broke out among them. Thousands of people died of that fever. The people died in such numbers that they had to be buried coffinless in trenches.- Collector
