- The famine affected this district greatly. The district was very thickly populated before the famine.
The famine came in 1847. A blight came on the potato crop that year and the blight has still continued. When the stalks were overground they withered away and the potatoes decayed in the ground A lot of people had to go to America and to England with the hunger.
A woman lived near the church in Duntryleague the time of the famine and she was struck blind (by the famine fever). She died about ten years ago. Her father and mother died with the hunger the time of the famine(continues on next page)- Collector
