God bless the mankind that gave us that cheer.
I hope you may live for many long years.
I hunted him up and I hunted him down.
And I hunted him three miles oer the town.
Through hedges and ditches I broke my old britches.
Until one of my little boys knocked him down.
On Christmas day I turned a split between my finger and my thumb.
And arose a big blister as big as a plum.
Shake, Shake the box all silver and no brass
Up with the kettle and down with the pot
Give us our answer and let us be gone.
There are numerous traditional games and customs connected with Halloween. Halloween is sometimes known in this district as Snap-Apple Night. It occurs on the 1st of November and it is on this night all the interesting games are played. Snap-apple is a very interesting game. An apple and a deep water vessel are provided. The apple is put into the water and it floats about. The trick of the game is to snap the apple with the teeth. A person must have his or her hands behind their backs so as to make it harder to catch the apple. When the pressure of the mouth comes down on the apple it sinks and slips in the water. This makes it hard to snap.
It is a custom on St John's night to light bonfires on the top of a hill and the burned bushes that remain to scatter them over the crops.
On Shrove Tuesday night all the people make pancakes
