country people, watched them closely. They saw them boring in different places. They people thought they must be looking for treasure. They found nothing and after some time they went away. It was said that they had not struck the right spot and it is expected they will come again.

There was once a man who lived in Glengarriff and he was a robber. He wore a leather britches with very big pockets so that when he would steal he would put it into the pockets. His name was Jerry Shea. The people used to call him "Jerry with the leather britches". My grandfather P.O'Sullivan, knew him well. One day Jerry was dying and he sent for my grandfather and he came. Jerry got up and both went far over the mountains. Jerry was going to bury the britches with all the gold inside and to tell my grandfather but my grandfather never knew what was in Jerry's mind. When my grandfather found it out he told him to be about his business. Then Jerry killed him and then he buried his treasure. The people heard about this and planned to kill him too so they followed him and killed him with a hatchet. On their way home they found the spade he dug the hole with. It was in a valley. Many people dug for the gold but everyone who dug for it died at sunrise the following morning.
