    old fashioned in person and conduct. When calling the rolls one day he came to Daniel and Michael Enright "Absent sir" was reply. "Ah!" said the old teacher. "The new Colavies". This was the name he got for that part of the parish known as the Lots. He always used a crooked-handled cane and fancied it very usefull to put around the boys necks and draw them in for punishment.

  2. Long ago there were two hedge schools one in Ballydonoghue and the other one was in Lisselton. The schoolmaster's name in Lisselton was James Long and the master's name in Ballydonoghue was Buachaill Stack. They used to go to their pupils houses and the best of the boys used to go to a Latin school that was at my grandfather's house in Ballydonoghue (John Collins). The master's name was Dan Collins and it was he who taught Father Mc Namara and Bishop Moriarty. Dan Collins was from Cork.
