was killed at this fair in a riot which led to the fair being stopped. The public STOCKS were situated at a corner of Davidson's shop. CROMWELL'S TRENCHES In a field beside the drained lake in Wm. Jones's land Cromwell is said to have planted the cannon with which he demolished the castle situated on Mick Cavanagh's land on the top of the hill and also the old church on the opposite side of the lake. About thirty-five years ago a land commissioner was on the spot and was shown where Cromwell's trenches were levelled by the Browns who then owned the land. THE OLD CASTLE AT CORONARY The site of the old castle referred to above is still to be seen. It is said that when the holders of the castle got word of Cromwell's approach, they attempted to escape across the lake in a boat, carrying CERTAIN TREASURE. The boat sank at a spot about midway between the point of the peninsula and the old graveyard. It is also said that when an old woman who had a Shebeen on Jas. McBrien's rock lay dying, she pointed to the spot where she saw the boat sinking and said, "Bád mór, Bád mór". About twenty-five years ago, when a ditch was being remade at the site of the Shebeen, broken drinking glasses were found. James Martin 80 of Glasdrummond said some years ago that there was also a castle on the hill north of Coroneary hill; that would be (-) This castle was also destroyed, he thought by Cromwell. T.J.B.
