  1. In a townland called Gortnamuckla there is a house which was a school long ago. In this house there now lives a nurse. There was one teacher by the name of Furey teaching in the school, but he was so severe that after a while he was dismissed and a man by the name of Fisher was appointed in his place. Every pupil had to take two turf to school with him each day to light the school fire. The pupils wrote on slates and never paper. No Irish was taught in the school. The teacher was paid eighty pounds a year.
